Personal trainer for adults over 50 in Boulder

Short answer: If you're over 50, look for a trainer who puts strength first, watches your form closely, and plans for the long run instead of the next six weeks. TrainBoulder is Mackie and Juliet Root, two coaches who've been coaching since 2010, who train you in your own home for $200 a session. Sessions are typically one-on-one, and you get a plan built around your body, your history, and the things you still want to do.

What changes after 50, and what doesn't

You can still get stronger after 50. One of our clients has trained with Juliet for 15 years and says she's stronger at 50 than she was in her mid-30s. What changes is how you need to train. Recovery takes longer, old injuries need to be worked around, and losing strength costs you more in daily life.

That's why the training has to be specific. Here's what we build into a plan for clients over 50.

  • Strength two to three days a week. We program squats, hinges, pushes, pulls, and carries, loaded so they feel hard and progressed so they keep working.
  • Power and balance. Moving quickly and steadily is what helps you catch yourself on a trail or a staircase. We train it in small doses.
  • Conditioning that fits your life. We use intervals for fitness, plus long easy efforts like hiking and riding.
  • Mobility where you need it. We spend time on the joints that limit your training, not a generic stretching routine.

Our goal is to keep you strong and capable for decades, so you can keep saying yes to the hike, the trip, and the grandkids.

What a session with us looks like

We come to your home at a time that works for you. Each session starts with a warm-up for the day's work. Then we coach your main strength lifts, add conditioning when your plan calls for it, and finish with notes on what's next.

Between sessions, you can add our hybrid program for $150 a month if you train with us at least four times a month, in person or in live online sessions. Every workout for the days we're not there is planned in the app, with demo videos and a direct line to us for questions.

Most clients train with us four, eight, or twelve times a month. Sessions are $200 each, with no packages and no long-term contract.

Choose another option if

  • You want the lowest cost. The rec centers offer a discount for adults 60 and older.
  • You like training in a group, with a set class schedule.
  • You want a big gym with a pool and lots of machines for every session.
  • You need clinical rehab after surgery. Start with a physical therapist, then come to us when you're cleared.
  • You live outside Boulder. Our online program, Always Ready, is built for adults 35 and older who've lifted before.

Choose TrainBoulder if

  • You want strength training built around your body and your history.
  • You'd rather train at home than drive to a gym.
  • You want an experienced coach watching your form.
  • You have a goal coming up: a big hike, a trip abroad, or keeping up with family.
  • You want a plan that keeps going for years, not a six-week program.

Who we are

We're a married couple who coach together, and we're board-certified nutrition coaches. We've been coaching since 2010, and each of us brings more than 20 years of strength and conditioning experience. Juliet co-owned and ran gyms in Philadelphia for more than a decade, where Mackie coached too. We teach cycling and strength classes in person in Boulder. We're ultra runners, and we've hiked the Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites and the Tour du Mont Blanc. We train for the same long-term strength and endurance we help our clients build.

"After 20 years of straight running and numerous overuse injuries, I found Juliet. I used to be all about cardio and didn't like weight training. In the middle of all this, I entered perimenopause. I am now stronger than I have ever been and feel empowered as I march through my 50s and beyond."

Common questions

Is it too late to start strength training after 50?

No. Adults in their 50s, 60s, and beyond can build strength with the right plan. We start where you are, with loads you can control, and progress from there.

Can you work around injuries or joint problems?

Yes. Working around old injuries is a normal part of coaching adults over 50. If you're under a doctor's or physical therapist's care, bring their guidance and we'll build your plan around it.
